WTO Meet on 22 March

In September 2003, the much-hyped Cancun Ministerial Meeting of the World Trade Organization (WTO) flopped without giving any positive developments for the agricultural sector. Now the next drama is going to be staged on 22 March 2004. The crucial agriculture negotiations at the WTO will resume on that day. India is going to insist at the negotiations on the inclusion of special provisions for developing countries in the framework. The current trend reveals that the European Union may be flexible on export subsidies. One major demand of India is the United States should substantially cut down its domestic subsidies. In the meet, India will be opposing  the blended tariff cut formula proposed by the United States and the European Union. At the same time, since the Uruguay Round formula of linear tariff cuts would result in equitable cuts for all countries India will be willing to accept it.
